    Info Fact

Who is the Flying Dutchman?

According to researcher Theo Meder, a trading ship named De Kroonvogel regularly sailed between present-day Java and Amsterdam. Its captain, Hendrik van der Decken, was a reckless daredevil who disregarded the safety of his ship and crew, navigating dangerous waters to shorten the journey. One fateful night in 1641, a mysterious figure appeared on deck, and the captain traded his soul for the ability to sail against the wind and through storms. However, after seven years, the contract ended, and the devil came for his due. Since then, the captain, known as the Flying Dutchman, roams the seas without ever finding a port.

From the ship's log of Prince George Frederick of Wales, later King George V:

"On July 11, 1881, at four in the morning, the Flying Dutchman appeared before our bow. A strange red light shone from the ship. The masts seemed to be on fire, the rigging and sails were clearly visible, even though it was 200 yards away. The crew was terrified, and no one spoke until the eerie apparition disappeared into the darkness!"
